Born in Pennsylvania, Peary joined the navy aged 21 (where he remained until his retirement) and led an array of expeditions to the Arctic, including one in 1909 that reached the North Pole for the first time (though some people dispute this). Polo’s travels, and the book he went on to write about them (called ‘The Travels of Marco Polo’) made him famous around Europe. A British Royal Navy captain, James Cook embarked on ground-breaking expeditions that helped map the Pacific, New Zealand and Australia. Cook's second voyage (1772-75) was the logical complement to what had been explored, and left unexplored, on his first. Sir Walter Raleigh was an English explorer, soldier, and writer. At age 17, he fought with the French Huguenots and later studied at Oxford. He became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I after serving in her army in Ireland. He was knighted in 1585 and, within two years, became captain of the Queen’s Guard. Although Italian by birth, maritime explorer Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and discovered the Americas under the Spanish emperor’s name. During his first voyage, he led three Spanish galleons, the Niña, Pinta, and the Santa Maria. All in all, between 1492 and 1503, Columbus sailed between Spain and the Americas.
